Bus Tour: Mosaic Treasures in Unexpected D.C. Places

Workshop Description

Like the myriad of small pieces of colored stone, tile, and glass that make up a mosaic, the Washington area contains a surprising number of mosaic works that together provide a picture of the styles and techniques that mark an art form that’s been practiced since ancient times.

Join mosaic artist Bonnie Fitzgerald for an inside look at a variety of mosaic treasures at notable public sites, contemporary spaces, and federal and private buildings that contain unexpected gems.

Tour highlights include the Library of Congress Jefferson Building, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world with hundreds of square feet of mosaic. We’ll visit an installation depicting the history of art and learn about mosaic making from a local artist. The tour goes behind the scenes at Off the Beaten Track, a warehouse of in D.C. of artists’ studios and eclectic businesses where we’ll experience a demonstration of both ancient and modern mosaic tools and techniques.
