This course will be hosted by Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture Inc. and is taught by Maverick Mosaics Owner, Bonnie Fitzgerald.
In this course students create a modern interpretation of a classical mosaic design using unglazed ceramic porcelain. Inspired by designs from Roman and Byzantine periods our modern interpretations will be of ancient motifs and subjects.
Unglazed Porcelains are the perfect choice to mimic the look of traditional mosaics. They have a natural look and earthy feel that is second to none. Its high-density clay body is easy to cut with inexpensive tile nippers. The material is very versatile, each tile is the same color inside and out (a full body clay) and the palette is rich, earthy tones.
Instructor will provide images of classical mosaics for students to create cartoons from. These cartoons will be used for determining the “andamento”, the exact lay pattern to be used when laying your tesserae. The course begins with a review of the history of mosaics as students gain an understanding of classical mosaic design and fabrication.
Students may bring their own image to interpret, with approval from instructor in advance. Separate supply fee of $65 payable directly to instructor includes substrate, adhesives, tool loan and ample supply of ceramic. All skill levels welcome.
Previous mosaic helpful but not required. We will only be working with unglazed porcelain in this course. Works grouted at the last class.
A supplemental supply list, including recommended hand tools, will be sent 10 days in advance, although tool loan provided during workshop hours.
This workshop will be held at Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, MD. Supply fee includes grouts in numerous colors, a take home grout kit and handouts.
