Animal and Pet Portraiture with Andrea Shreve Taylor

Workshop Description

Animals are a popular mosaic portraiture subject matter and this is your chance to work with a master. In this workshop you will learn the process to create a portrait of a special companion animal or furry family member, or a close-up portrait of a single non-companion animal if you so desire. We will focus on mammals for this workshop, so please no reptiles, insects, birds, fish, etc.You will learn the techniques to capture the spirit and personality of the selected animal in the mosaic medium using stained glass and other glass products. We will explore both direct and indirect methods of creating a portrait, and you will select the method you prefer to create your own project.

Andrea will share her extensive experience and guide you in developing your own skills through a combination of lecture, Q&A, and independent hands-on creativity. You will learn about color and shading, lay patterns and andamento, opera, composition, cutting specialized shapes, and other aspects of design. You will also learn how to use the appropriate tools and materials during this three day workshop.

Everyone will create their own animal portrait using art glass, adhesives and substrates suitable for interior display.

With three days working time we hope you leave with a completed project, however this will depend on your individual working speed. If you do not finish you will be provided with enough materials to complete your project on your own. You may choose to do a more stylized portrait, which is a speedier process, or begin work on a more realistic representation.

All or part of your canvas may be enhanced with grout. If you get to the grout grouting process during the workshop great, if not, no worries, you'll be given grout to do on your own. A grout demonstration will be given on Sunday.

This workshop should particularly benefit those who already have some experience and are comfortable making mosaics using stained (art) glass using basic, glass-cutting tools, and who wish to honor a companion animal through their artwork, or to broaden their skills in representational mosaic art. This workshop is not recommended for beginners or as your first mosaic project, but novices to experienced mosaic makers will do well.

Students will work with their own photos, and images MUST be approved by the instructor for suitability prior to the workshop. Submission of a good quality electronic image of your animal to instructor TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE is required. Supplemental photos can also be helpful for reference helping you capture the personality of your animal. We ask for the image 2 weeks prior so we can obtain the necessary materials and prepare your to-scale photocopies.

Supply fee covers your substrate, a generous selection of stained and other glass materials and the TO-SCALE COLOR photocopies you will need for reference and pattern making. Students are asked to bring their basic mosaic tool kit including a good quality wheeled nipper, glass scorer and running pliers. If you are traveling to us via air and do not wish to check your bag let us know and we will loan you tools. TSA will confiscate your wheel tool if in your carry on.

This workshop will be held at the Vienna Art Center, 115 Pleasant Street, NW, Vienna, VA 22180. Supply fee paid directly to the instructor day of workshop.
