Farmington PENNSYLVANIA Touchstone Center for Craft: 2-D and Bas Relief Exterior Mosaics (September, 2017)

Workshop Description

Join Maverick Mosaics’ founder Bonnie Fitzgerald for a 4-day mosaic retreat at Pennsylvania's only residential craft school, Touchstone Center for Crafts. At Touchstone, nature and creative energy combine to produce a unique synergy and students learn in an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie.

Go outside with your mosaics! This workshop covers everything you need to know about creating professional caliber mosaics to withstand moisture and freeze-thaw cycles in exterior environments. You may also explore dimensional works by creating multiple substrate layers. Class lecture includes important information about selecting substrates and fixatives that will endure weather year round.

You will learn how to design with and cut stained glass for use in mosaic. We also will work with Italian vitreous glass tiles and use glass fusions, milleflori and smalti as accents. Each student will have the opportunity to create a finished project approximately one square foot. Previous mosaic and/or stained glass experience is helpful, but not required. This is the perfect workshop for anyone wishing to take their glass mosaic projects outside and a great use of your scrap glass!

On Friday night, we begin with a picture presentation and lecture covering technical considerations, design principles, and case studies. We review all materials suited for exterior work, including testing materials. Saturday and Sunday is spent designing our mosaic and preparing our substrate and materials. Then, we create it. Monday, is devoted to grouting and discussing finishing tips and tricks.

The adhesive used is exterior grade thin-set mortar and our substrate is Wedi board, an all-weather, industry approved, cementitious product. You may choose a 12 inch by 12 inch square or 14 inch by 11 inch rectangle as a base and additional Wedi to construct layers. You can easily cut Wedi into almost any shape—you are not limited to a square or rectangle, we just begin there! The recommended project size is with our time frame in mind and with an eye to students completing their mosaics during workshop hours.

Lots of personal mentoring and no question will go unanswered.

The separate $40 supply fee covers your Wedi substrate, hanging devices, adhesive, grout and a selection of stained glass, vitreous glass tiles, glass fusions and milleflori. Students should plan on bringing 2-3 hobby sheets of stained glass or enough other exterior rated materials for their specific project. A note from the instructor will come out a week or two in advance as to how to prepare. Students are asked to bring their own glass cutting tools.)

Not sure how to "test" is a material is rated exterior? All glass is FINE, ceramic and dishes there is a simple "test." Click here for quick video.
