PO Box 1551, Vienna, VA 22183 - (703) 856-5160
This workshop will be held at Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD 20812.
Create a beautiful mosaic composition of flowers and/or fauna. Students are guided through the complete process of creating a glass mosaic for interior display. Working from photographs, graphic designs or paintings students learn the nuances of working in stained glass and glass tiles. Cutting techniques especially well suited for this subject matter will be introduced. We will dedicate a portion of our time experimenting with various andamento and lay patterns, determining what works best for your selected image. Andamento is the visual flow of your mosaic tessarae, the eqaulivant of the brushstroke in painting.
Instructor will provide a selection of images for students to choose from. Project size approximately 9” x 11” or 10” x 10”, and is with our time frame in mind. Images offered will be in a graphic style (Andy Warhol-ish), painterly style (al la Georgia O'Keefe inspired), or realistic (working from a photograph).
Stained glass is an inherently American mosaic material, readily available and cost effective, most of our compositions will be created using 80% or more stained glass. We will also incorporate vitreous glass tiles and some other surprise materials to further personalize the composition. We will review sourcing, preparation of materials and fabrication methods.
Supply fee covers your substrate, amble selection of stained glass, other mosaic materials including milleflori and glass fusions, adhesive and grout. Students are welcome to bring supplemental mosaic materials. If student wishes to provide his or her own inspiration art, instructor must approve it 2 weeks in advance.
Works will NOT be grouted in class, a demonstration will be given and students sent home with a grout kit.
Previous mosaic and/or stained glass experience helpful but not required. Students asked to provide stained glass cutting tools and a mosaic wheel tool. Instructor will loan tools upon request.
