ITALY & SLOVENIA: Culture, Cuisine & Curative Treasures with Bonnie & Ken Fitzgerald WAIT LISTING

Workshop Description

Experience the splendor of Northern Italy and the country of Slovenia with Maverick Mosaics International artist and host Bonnie Fitzgerald as we open doors for you to explore, create and learn. And, with Bonnie’s professional and personal relationships, we will visit private studios and meet internationally acclaimed mosaic artists.

Get ready to enjoy a rich and memorable week of mosaic art history, cultural engagement, terrific food, studio visits and great company.

Ravenna is the birthplace of Byzantine mosaics and we begin our adventure steeped in this rich tradition. Ravenna is also home to some of the world’s most famous contemporary mosaic artists and we will spend time in galleries and studios enjoying the many facets of mosaic history. There will visits to world-renowned glass factories and galleries in Venice and Murano and we’ll see first hand the tradition of formal mosaic education as we visit the world famous Spilimbergo’s school of mosaic. We breathe in the mountain air of Slovenia’s magnificent Lake Bled and experience Europe’s “Green Capital,” Liublijan, Slovenia. This will be an amazing one of a kind adventure.

From our meeting place in Treviso, Italy a private coach will transport you to Ravenna. With its rich history of mosaic production, Ravenna is home of the Basilica of San Vitale, which contains some of the most celebrated mosaics in the West. We will visit the city’s premier museums, take in a historical perspective of Byzantium, and visit galleries and artist studios for a taste of the contemporary mosaic art scene.

Then it’s on to Venice, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Of course we will visit the "must sees", Saint Mark's Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, and have a private visit to the Orsoni glass factory, where we will witness the furnace artisans at work making smalti (shopping time allotted too!)

Located on the Grand Canal we have arranged for guided tour of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, their impressive collection of contemporary art is another jaw dropping experience. Lots of free time has been built into the schedule to explore Venetian galleries, vaporetto out to the island of Murano and dining in quaint neighborhood restaurants.

Northward to Friuli Mosaic School in Spilembergo. This internationally acclaimed institution is the world’s leader in terms of mosaic techniques and materials. The School objective is to unite tradition with innovation. Our time there will allow for gallery viewing and visits to local installations fabricated by students over the years. We also plan to visit the nearby Giovanni Travisanutto factory, where countless mosaic artworks destined for all over the world are created (including the domes a the Bacilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.) An exclusive and private studio/gallery visit to Maestro Giulio Menossi in Udine a celebrated contemporary master of the mosaic medium will be a memory to cherish.
