Our adventure begins in Washington, D.C. On the morning of November 7, we meet at our hotel and board our private coach to begin two full days of mosaic site seeing and special studio tours in our Nation’s Capital. In Washington we visit sacred sites, including the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the Franciscan Monastery, along with several unique and hidden gems in offices, city parks and municipal buildings. Our local treasured artist Megan Walsh shares her studio and gallery space along with demonstrations and insights into her working methodology. We enjoy a bonus stop at D.C. Clay Works, the largest clay and sculpture studio in the area.

We then coach on to the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, where we’ll visit the Magic Garden, a mosaicked visionary art environment created by award winning artist Isaiah Zagar. Zagar has been creating public art mosaics in Philadelphia for over 30 years and our docent lead private tour will enlighten us to his story. We also make a stop at Tiffany’s remarkable “Dream Garden” mosaic interpretation of Maxfield Parrish’s iconic painting. And no worries, we’ll make time for a Philly favorite, the famous “Cheesesteak.”

On to Bryn Athen, PA and a hidden gem, Glen Carin Castle. Home to the Pitcairn family for more than 40 years the museum now contains a collection of 8,000 artworks from ancient cultures including Greece and Egyptian, the Roman Empire and medieval Europe. This collection is dripping in mosaics, many made on site in Mr. Pitcairn’s private forge.

A short hop up the road to New Hope in Bucks County, PA where we settle in for the evening. Perched on the Banks of the Delaware River New Hope has long been known as an artists colony with a broad range of eclectic shops and eateries. New Hope is always entertaining.

In the morning on to New York and another private studio tour, then off to mid-town Manhattan where you enjoy a free afternoon and evening of adventure. This is your chance to take in a Broadway show, a museum, visit Times Square and play with your mosaic friends. Bright and early the next morning, with a private guide, we explore the city’s subway mosaics. You’ll see a broad and diverse range of mosaic styles, some magnificent mosaic signage created at the turn of the 20th century and more recent works including the Second Avenue Chuck Close works.

This is a 6 night, 5 day trip; we begin our tour on the morning of November 7 in Washington, D.C. The trip concludes after dinner on Sunday evening, with a hotel check out time of 11 am on Monday, November 11. Note this is Veterans Day holiday weekend and Monday is a Federal holiday. You can check in to our D.C. hotel anytime in the afternoon of Wednesday, November 6 and spend the evening on your own enjoying monuments, the Smithsonian museums (open until 5pm daily), D.C.s fantastic cuisine and meeting up with the mosaic tribe.
