Mosaics: Mesh Method

Workshop Description

8 WEEK COURSE, this is a BRAND NEW OFFERING, the Smithsonian classes are VERY POPULAR, sign up early!

This course will be held at the Smithsonian Institution's Rippley Center, Washington, DC and is taught by Maverick Mosaics Owner, Bonnie Fitzgerald.

This course will introduce students to creating mosaics in an “indirect” method, meaning the art work can be installed outside of the classroom. Using unglazed porcelain ceramic our mosaics will be suitable for exterior or interior display.

The tiles we will use mimic the look of traditional mosaic materials with natural hues and an earthy feel. They are especially attractive in bold graphic motifs. Instructor will provide patterns, although students welcome to bring their own designs.

Students will learn how to cut shapes and sizes for exactly their design using a simple tile nipper. There will be an emphasis on classical mosaic lay patterns.

All experience levels welcome. For returning students this is an opportunity to experience this wonderful mosaic material and master a proven installation method used for architectural installations such as backsplashes and shower enhancements.

Students can choose to create their mosaic on fiberglass mesh, the “indirect” method of fabrication, and mount their finished piece on an exterior rated surface, or if the mosaic is intended for permanent display Instructor will review installation methodology. If meant to be a hime decor piece work can be done directly onto substrate.
