Workshop Description

In this comprehensive, hands-on 2-day workshop we will explore the advantages and beauty of a layered tesserae technique. Learn how to bring out extra depth and dimension in your mosaic by applying several layers of glass and other materials to your project. Explore how form and volume can be emphasized with the “brush-strokes” of tesserae, and how to create a beautiful flow, direction, and overlay effects in your mosaic.

This workshop will be an exploration of technique. Each student will create a 10”x12” study of a selected image. The students will focus on mastering the layered technique through conveying transparency, form, shading, and other visual effects. By doing a study of a portion of your selected image you will create an important reference sample for working on your next larger piece. For example, if you wish to depict a flower, you may choose to concentrate on a petal instead of the entire image.

Students should bring their own images to work from, the subject of your artwork is up to you. Good subjects are flowers, birds, animals with fur, cosmic scenes, topographic landscapes, clouds, water. We do ask that you send your photos to Yulia at least 2 weeks before the workshop so she is sure it is a good choice for this technique. Yulia will also provide images to choose from if you prefer, thee will be available at the workshop. If you really, really want to do something individual and "stuck" for an image Bonnie at Maverick Mosaics is happy to help you, drop her a note through the "contact us" tab above.

In the workshop we will be working with stained glass and an ample selection will be available based on the photographs sent for approval in advance. If you wish to incorporate other materials, such as stone or smalti, please bring them with you to the workshop. Supply fee also covers substrate and adhesive.

Basic knowledge of mosaic-making is required to take this workshop. Students should bring their own mosaic tools, most importantly a wheeled nipper and a good pair of tweezers.
