Radical Dimensions in Glass Mosaic with Kelley Knickerbocker

Workshop Description

In this intense hands-on course, acclaimed contemporary mosaic artist Kelley Knickerbocker spills all the beans on her signature “extreme sport” versions of glass-on-glass mosaic:  Flat Stacking, in which stained glass is built up in multiple layers over mirror to create a luminous diffusion of light and a 3-D foreground/background effect; and Edge Stacking, in which stained glass strips of varying heights/lengths are stacked on edge either singly or in series so that the wavy and often beautifully striated riven edge is the visual focus.

During this 2-day course students will incorporate these techniques in a small mosaic panel. Additionally, participants will learn how to cut and set unglazed porcelain as a contrast to the glass in a dedicated 4-hour session.  Instruction will be given on designing specifically for these unique and dramatic techniques, as well as methods for mixing these techniques with other media, and appropriate adhesives, tools, and applications.

All materials are included with the workshop supply fee. Students are welcome to supplement provided glass with glass from their own inventory.

Rivenworks Mosaics is Kelley’s Seattle studio. She works in numerous mediums for architectural clients, but in her personal work she returns again and again to glass. The visual depth and light-handling properties of glass, as well as its seemingly limitless palette of colors, offer up endless possibilities for dimensional exploration. From those explorations Kelley has developed her signature stacked glass techniques, in which glass is layered over itself and set on edge to create unique dimension and color blending.
