Contemporary Mosaics Workshop: Imagery Inspired by the Cosmos
This workshop will be held at Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD 20812. Weekend workshop May 20 & 21, 2017.
This class introduces participants to the ancient art of mosaics with a decidedly contemporary twist and theme. We will look to the heavens for inspiration creating a fine-art glass mosaic based on images from the Cosmos.
Students are guided through the complete process of working in the direct method of mosaic making using stained glass, smalti, milleflori, ceramic and other glass products. Instructor will provide a selection of images from the Hubble Telescope and NASA for students to select from.
In addition to creating a beautiful art object students will be introduced to the nuances of working with various mosaic materials, and how to mix materials with harmony and grace. We will review design principles, fabrication methods , cutting techniques and understand how lay patterns (andamento) impacts your work. We will also discuss sourcing and preparation of materials.
Learn how to create your own mosaics using photographs of the cosmos as inspiration. All skill levels are invited. For experienced students you will find the techniques taught in the class are important skills to have in your arsenal.
In a note from NASA representative Zolt Levay : “I work in the public outreach office that helps to publicize Hubble's results and am mostly responsible for producing many of those images. So when I see that they are so inspiring, especially to artists, it makes me feel that we have succeeded in helping bridge the worlds of science and art, and reach broad segments of the public.“
Material included: selection of glass materials, your substrate and adhesive.
All skill levels welcome.
Tuition $280. A supply fee of $65 payable to instructor the at the first class. Supply fee covers MOST mosaic materials students will need to complete a project. Students are welcome to bring supplemental materials, but not required. Tool loan provided, although students urged to purchase their own glass cutting tools if they wish to work on projects at home.
