This workshop covers everything you need to know about using stained glass to create professional, permanent mosaics to withstand moisture and freeze-thaw cycles in exterior environments.
You will learn how to design with and cut stained glass for use in mosaic, and class lecture will include important information about selecting substrates and fixatives that will endure weather year round. Each student will have the opportunity to create a finished project approximately one square foot.
Projects for this workshop will be 2-dimensional and constructed on Wediboard, a versatile and lightweight substrate rated for exterior use. Students will work on approximately 1 square foot of mosaic. Suggested projects include a house number or small mural.
Friday evening we begin with lecture and look at lots of inspirational images. We prepare out substrates and begin design work. Saturday we prepare our glass, lay our tesserae and adhere our mosaic. Sunday we continue working on our mosaic. There will be a grout demonstration on Sunday, anyone finished is welcome to grout, but our adhesive must set overnight. Our adhesive will be exterior grade thin-set mortar. The 1 square foot project is with our time frame in mind with an eye to students completing during workshop hours. You may choose a 12” x 12” square or 14” x 11” rectangle.
A separate $65 supply fee covers your Wedi substrate, hanging devices, adhesive, an ample selection of stained glass and glass tiles and grout to take home. Students are welcome to bring supplemental materials keeing in mind they are freeze/thaw rated.
The project size has been selected with the workshop time frame in mind.
On Sunday we will have a grout demonstration and those of you who are ready to grout your project we will help you. If you are not ready to grout you will be sent home with a grout to do on you own.
Previous mosaic and/or stained glass experience is helpful, but not required. This is the perfect workshop for anyone wishing to take their stained glass projects outside and a great use of your scrap glass!
Students asked to bring their own glass cutting tools, scorer, pliers and mosaic wheel tool. If you do not own contact instructor for loan during workshop hours. Students should also bring tweezers, palette knife for spreading adhesive and an apron.
Skill level: All levels, from beginner to experienced are welcome. Minimum age 16.
Tuition $265.00, and a separate $65 supply fee, payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop, includes substrate, ample supply of glass.
