Reboot your Creativity & Discover your Artistic Voice
PO Box 1551, Vienna, VA 22183 - (703) 856-5160
There are those materials that speak to us in an inviting and come-hither voice. Whether you found it on your evening walk, or it enticed you to buy it, for some inexplicable reason you just had to have it. Somehow it spoke to you. Inspired you. You brought it home with the intent of becoming an integral part of a future project, but it just sits there, waiting, begging. Use Me! Please! This workshop will help you become part of the conversation and listen to the siren’s voice of your materials
Join Kim for a spontaneous, fun filled and technique mastering workshop. We begin the workshop with a presentation about contemporary mosaics, a snap shot of the art form and a look at artists who work with a wide range of materials..
For your mosaic project you will begin with an anchor element(s) from your personal collection. Respecting our substrate size anchor elements should be no larger than 4" diameter or can be a smaller unique items you have collected multiples of; some examples include rocks and minerals, geodes, tortillas, crockery, plates, shells, keys or other metal objects. You can have more than one anchor element, maybe it’s two things that you like together. Kim will work individually with each student to spontaneously develop an artwork that integrates those bits you love! There will be lots of collaboration, experimentation and glee along the way.
If you own a hammer and hardie please feel free to bring it along with all your other favorite hand tools. We will have several other tools at your disposal for training and use: wet saw, band saw, tile cutters and grinders. Use of these tools will allow you to experience and process materials in new ways.
Students are asked to bring some of their favorite materials, things that may compliment your anchor elements, but please DO NOT purchase additional materials for this workshop, use up what you have that’s the point! Maverick Mosaics will supplement with a generous selection of glass products, stone, found objects and doo dads. We also ask students to bring one pound of materials to be donated to the “community supply table”, making for a rich selection of materials to choose from. Included in the supply fee are adhesives (Weldbond, gray or white thin-set and silicone) and an EZ Mosaic frame substrate measuring 11” x 14”. If you wish to work on a larger size or different shape surface please bring your own substrate. EZ Frames are lightweight aluminum frames with minimum reveal, 1/4" Wedi board, t-nut fasteners and D-ring mounting system. Perfect for this project and ready to hang!
Kim will also bring a selection of Mexican smalti and tortillas for sale from smalti.com
This is a creatively diverse and technically rich workshop. Some mosaic experience helpful.
